- Patiala School for the Deaf was started in Apr 1967, when there was no awareness of the need of special education to the deaf children. It is a pioneer in special education to deaf children in North India.
- School is from Pre Nursery Class to Class XII. It is Co- educational and residential for girls and boys. Priority is given to children from poor and from rural areas for admission.
- School provides state of the art special education and is well equipped with all training aids and appliances. All classes are smart classes with LCD TV and with FM hearing aid system. It has a special Audiometry section where all children are tested for hearing and accordingly given proper hearing aids.
- The medium of instruction is Total communication method and our students are well versed in sign language and Indian Sign language.
- All teachers are qualified as to impart special education and are qualified in imparting special education. The teacher to students ratio is 1: 15.
- Lesson plans are student friendly with stress on diagrams and images and practical to understand and assimilate.
- All children are proficient in use of computers and internet search engines.
- Stress is laid upon extracurricular activities and all children are made to participate. Sports are encouraged and several students have brought glory in International events. Students also excel in cultural events, art, drawing and painting etc. 24 hour broadband fibre net is available to all the students in all the class rooms.
- Our Art and craft section is very innovative and new ideas emerge from here.
- A separate section to impart vocational training in candle making, pottery, loom, photography also exists.
